Welcome and Invitation

Prince Edward Island

It would be our great honour to be the first North American host of the NatWest Island Games. Prince Edward Island was the first island on the West side of the Atlantic to become a member of the International Island Games Association.

Prince Edward Island has extensive experience hosting large national and international sporting events. The Island hosted the 1991 Canada Winter Games where 2400 athletes participated. We were also host of the International Softball Championships, World and National Curling Championships and National hockey tournaments. In 2007, we organized the first year of a three-year International Women’s Cycling competition with the most elite cyclists from around the world, including the Australian Olympic Gold Medalist.

In 2009, PEI will host 4000 athletes for the Canadian Summer Games in its state-of-art athletic facilities.

The Island also has over 20 golf courses including a links course at Crowbush Cove. We have hosted major celebrity golf events that were televised throughout North America.

June is a beautiful month in Prince Edward Island. The temperature is an average of 22°C, ideal for athletic competition.

Prince Edward Island has the capabilities to organize and host a successful NatWest International Island Games in 2013, and we welcome the member islands of the world.

Prince Edward Island

Prince Edward Island is especially beautiful in June. A hundred shades of green as vivid as one can imagine come forth from the undulating earth. It is a sightseers’ paradise.

Each road is a scenic path and over each hill is yet another panoramic display of landscape with rivers and inlet bays exposing auburn cliffs against the rich blue waters.

The Island has deep inlets that have created 1000 miles of shoreline ranging from red sand beaches against 40-foot cliffs to white sand-dunes that reach 10 or 20 miles across the mouths of bays.

As you drive along the coastline in the early evening, a natural theatre of shorebirds and the hues of the setting sun will consume you until the last glimmer of light falls behind the horizon. The early morning and evening sun illuminates the greens and yellows, so you may find yourself being one of the slow drivers holding up traffic as you gawk out the window.

Travelling through the countryside, you will see architected homes that show elements of 19th century European influence with their Italianate windows, French mansard roofs, Victorian details and wooden interpretations of English and Irish stone cottages.

There are fine examples of church architecture designed by the famed Island architect William Harris. He had a passion for music and designed his churches with the same principles as a violin, using the same woods to create perfect acoustical spaces.

Prince Edward Island is the place that inspired the world-renowned author Lucy Maud Montgomery to write the ever-popular Anne of Green Gables which is celebrating its 100th year of publication in 2008. Each year, tourists from around the world make their sojourn to the romantic Land of Anne.

The modern Prince Edward Island has evolved in its connection to the land and sea by preserving the best from the past and moving forward with sensitivity to the environment, traditions and culture.

Prince Edward Island has an extensive National Park system that preserves the fragile and precious landscapes and dunes.

The Island has become a North American leader in wind energy with wind farms on both tips of the Island which produce a portion of the Island’s energy.

The Island is the location of a National Research Council which specializes in nutrisciences. A vibrant bioscience industry with over 20 companies is developing products and exporting them internationally.

One of Canada’s three Veterinary Colleges is located in Prince Edward Island.

The Culinary Institute of Canada is located in Charlottetown producing top chefs that are creating fine cuisine with the fresh ingredients found from the sea and land of PEI.

The Island has developed a reputation for outstanding food and was recently featured on the front page of the New York Times travel section. Malpeque Oysters and PEI Mussels are on menus around the world. Each year more local restaurants are popping up with new delicious offerings.

Prince Edward Island now has over 20 golf courses, some among the best in Canada.

Prince Edward Island has been one of Canada’s premiere tourist destinations for over a century with a recent average of one million annual visitors. The 15km bridge that links the Island to the mainland has been a great boost to the Island’s economy.

Prince Edward Island is tucked into the Gulf of St. Lawrence in the eastern coast of Canada. Because of its characteristic shape, the early Mi’kmaq named the island Abeqweit meaning “cradled in the waves”. It is in the midst of the Atlantic region of provinces, and Islanders consider it the centre jewel.
