BRESSAY
TO LERWICK OPEN WATER 1500 METRE SWIM SUNDAY 19TH AUGUST 2001
Individual wishing to enter the Bressay Swim for 2001 are to
comply with, and provide the following instructions / information.
Pre - Event:
- All participants are to be current registered members of
the Scottish Amateur Swimming Association.
- Each entrant will complete this entry
form and return it to the address below by 10th
August 2001. No entries will be accepted after this date.
- All entrants and officials will attend an event briefing
to be held at the Lerwick side of the Lerwick - Bressay Ferry terminal at
1130 on the 19th.
- Swimmers are obliged to satisfy the event organisers that
they have completed sufficient open water swim training in Shetland waters
by the 10th August. Swimmers must be capable of demonstrating
that this training has included sessions of an in water duration of at
least 20 minutes.
During - Event:
- Swimmers will obey all instructions of the officials.
- The number of swimmers for the event will be limited to 2
or 3 per canoe dependant upon their speed/experience. The event may be
split into Male and Female sessions to accommodate numbers.
- The course shall be 1500 metres in length. The start
point will be the Car park adjacent to the Bressay ferry terminal. There
will be a temporary buoy placed south of the start point around which all
swimmers shall pass before heading to the Small Boat Harbour. The finish
point will be the slip in the Small Boat Harbour. Swimmers must leave the
water immediately.
- The buoy will be placed in position just before the
event, and removed immediately it is completed.
- Safety cover will be provided by power driven craft and
canoes. The coordinating vessel is to ensure that it has communications
with Lerwick Port Control (LPA) on channel 12 at all times. Power driven
craft are to keep a safe distance from the swimmers. Canoes should be the
first point of in-water assistance.
- LPA will confirm that the swim is permitted before
swimmers enter the water.
- The event will be cancelled at the discretion of the
organisers for any factor that may endanger the safety of the swimmers,
e.g: Tide, Weather, Port operations.
- In the event of a swimmer being perceived to be in
difficulty or there being any doubt as to their well being, they are to be
removed from the water. This is to be carried out by a canoe. Any
challenge to a decision to remove a swimmer from the water will only be
considered AFTER the event. Swimmers will not be allowed to re-enter the
water.
- The primary stroke for the event is Front crawl.
- Swimmers will not be allowed to receive support from any
floating object, or use any aids to swimming other than a swimsuit, hat
and goggles. No neoprene or other insulating material may be worn.
- Swimmers shall not consume, or so recently have consumed
as to be still under the influence of; alcohol, or stimulants. Swimmers
may stand for rest if possible so long as they remain static and make no
forward progress.
- Swimmers are to ensure that they keep clear of any other
swimmer unless rendering assistance.
Post Event:
- There will be an opportunity to recover at the Clickimin
Pool, and then take refreshments at the Lerwick Hotel.
