The 2 Girls and 4 Boys who represented Shetland in Swimming at the Island Games realised many of their individual goals set in December 1998, when the 24 week training plan started, and culminated in an intense 4 week period of competitions in June. Three weeks before the Games all swam at the Inter-County when new Records were established in Orkney. Three of the boys then travelled to Glasgow to compete in the Scottish National Age Group Championships a fortnight before departing for Gotland.

The primary aim for all the swimmers at the Island Games was to achieve Personal Best Times (PBs) in their first stroke at the 3 main distances of: 50, 100, and 200 metres. Then to achieve PBs at other strokes. With 6 swimmers the Shetland Team was one of the smaller and achieved a very creditable 9^th position of the 17 teams competing. This result reflects the hard work that all the swimmers have put in over the last 6 months, and their total commitment throughout the 4-day event. Of the 44 individual swims, 27 PBs were made, with some being, (subject to confirmation) New Shetland Records (NR). In addition the 4 boys competed in the 4 Team relay events. The team made 3 individual finals (top 6), and 1 relay final. An outstanding result, considering the young age of the Shetland Team and the presence of older more experienced International swimmers at the meet.
